JHARKHAND: Karl Marx’s Bicentennial Birth Anniversary Celebration

A STATE-level event to mark the bicentennial birth anniversary of Karl Marx was organised in the steel city of Jamshedpur on January 21. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Prakash Karat was the main speaker. The Michel John Auditorium packed to its capacity with hundreds of industrial workers, peasants, employees, students, youth, women and intellectuals.

Chemplast Workers Chastised For Joining All India Strike, Stand Ground

SANMAR Group, Chemplast (Plant III) in Mettur, Salem district, Tamil Nadu, dismissed 94 workers for joining the general strike call given by trade unions on January 8 and 9. Recently, 100 workers of the Plant had joined the CITU and despite serving prior strike notice to the management, 94 of them were dismissed and were obstructed from entering the Plant on January 10.

TAMIL NADU: Lenin’s Statue Installed in Tirunelveli

Just months after a statue of V I Lenin was pulled down in Tripura by right-wing goons, the largest statue of the Communist icon in the country was installed in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu at the initiative of the CPI(M) Tirunelveli district committee.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury unveiled the statue. He congratulated the Tirunelveli district committee of the Party for the initiative and recalled how the legendary Tamil poet, Subramania Bharathi, who was a native of Tirunelveli, had penned a song praising the October Revolution.

MAHARASHTRA: SFI State Conference Held in Mumbai

THE 17th Maharashtra state conference of the SFI that was held in the Adarsh Vidyalaya, Mumbai, from December 24 to 26, 2018, was attended by 166 delegates and observers from 16 districts. They included 39 girl students. The stage was named after SFI martyr Abhimanyu from Kerala, the hall after a former SFI leader from Pune, Dr Shekhar Bendre, a young medical doctor who died in an accident last year, and the venue was named after martyr Gauri Lankesh, who was mercilessly gunned down by Sanatan Sanstha criminals.

TELANGANA: Massive Response to All India General Strike

IN a huge response, about 20 lakh workers in Telangana, both from organised and unorganised sectors, directly participated in the all India general strike on January 8 and 9, as per the call given by 10 central trade unions and National Federations. Employees of the Telangana state government, railways, defense and teachers participated in the rallies and dharnas protesting the anti-working class and anti-people policies adopted by the BJP-led central government.

MAHARASHTRA: DYFI Holds Eleventh State Conference

THE 11th Maharashtra state conference of the DYFI held at Wada in Palghar district on January 11-13, 2019, resolved to rapidly expand the youth movement and organisation to meet the challenges posed by the murderous rightwing offensive. In connection with the conference, a massive youth rally and public meeting were organised on January 11. Thousands of DYFI activists from Palghar district participated in the rally held at Wada.

WEST BENGAL: Two-day March of Determination in Terror Zone

IN another show of defiance, thousands of people joined a two day march in one of the worst terrorised areas of West Bengal. With TMC coming to power in 2011, the entire stretch of Arambagh-Tarakeswar-Goghat in Hooghly district, has turned into terror zone. The area in Hooghly-Bankura border witnessed series of attacks on Left activists and supporters. Almost all CPI(M) and Left parties offices were forcibly closed. Many such offices were seized by the ruling party. Hundreds of houses were attacked and a large number of Left cadres and supporters were forced to leave their living places.

LDM Protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Guwahati

THE Left Democratic Manch, Assam (LDM) organized a massive protest against the central government move to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 on January 7, 2018 in Guwahati. It may be noted that the people of Assam are agitating against the proposed bill, which seeks to give citizenship to the non-Muslim illegal-infiltrators rendering the Assam Accord(AA) meaningless. The AA sets the deadline at March 24, 1971 as the base year for detecting illegal infiltrators in the state. Several hundreds of people spontaneously joined the protest programme organized by the LDM Assam.
